Offroading requires traction, lots of traction. Although nothing will compensate for driver skill, lockers will help you get over and through harder spots in a controlled chaos manner. If you've ever wheeled a Jeep with locked axles you will never want to go back to an open diff. Unless you own a Jeep Rubicon that already comes with Air Lockers, or bought a used Jeep that came with lockers from the previous owners, this is one modification or upgrade you will contemplate.

There are several types of lockers: lunchbox lockers, full carrier lockers, electric lockers, air lockers and although not a locker, still a contender to lock the rear end, the spool. Each have their pros and cons, very in price and very in installation and maintenance. Your locker choice will depend on price, terrain and install type.
Lunchbox Lockers are your entry level locker that install by basically replacing the spider gears in the standard carrier, no gear reset required and easy to maintain.
Full carrier locker like the famous Detroit Locker will, as the name implies, replace the entire carrier and thus require new gear reset. Keep your current gear set and possible future regearing in mind when purchasing a full carrier locker as you don't want to have to buy a new locker if you change gears down the road and your new gears don't fit your carrier.
The Air Locker or the electric locker, the cadillac of offroad lockers. These are the best and most expensive, because they act like an open carrier when disabled but at the flick of a switch you have a fully locked differential, unlike the Detroit that will lock your rearend on a tight turn when on the gas chirping your tires along the way. Install is the same as a full carrier locker with the added complexity of either installing an air pump or plumbing it to your on-board air or wiring up the electrical.
