Offroad Parts: Lockers and Parts

Offroading requires traction, lots of traction.  Although nothing will compensate for driver skill, lockers will help you get over and through harder spots in a controlled chaos manner.  If you've ever wheeled a Jeep with locked axles you will never want to go back to an open diff.  Unless you own a Jeep Rubicon that already comes with Air Lockers or bought a used Jeep that came with lockers from the previous owners, this is one modification or upgrade you will contemplate.  There are several types of lockers: lunchbox lockers, full carrier lockers, electric lockers, air lockers and although not a locker, still a contender to lock the rear end, the spool.

Lunchbox Lockers: Fit inside the stock differential carrier by replacing the spider gears with a clutch assembly.  When the clutches sense excessive wheel slip it will engage and lock the axle shafts sending power equally to both wheels.  These locker types are good for stock Jeep axles (D30, D35, 8.25 or even D44) where tire size will not exceed 33".

Full Case Automatic Lockers: Detroit lockers are the pinnacle of the full case lockers.  These cases replace the entire stock open case (in most instances) with the locker unit that is comprised of heavy duty springs and geared clutches which will lock the axle shafts when wheel spin and slip is excessive.  These are more robust then lunchbox lockers and can handle 35" plus size tires and horsepower.  Since these lockers are automatic and sensing there on road characteristics can be less then desirable, especially on short wheel base Jeeps with tight turning radius.  Your tires will chirp and if you step hard on the gas you will feel the locker engage/disengage on the road.

Electric Lockers: Full case lockers that are locked or engaged via electric switch from the cabin of the Jeep.  These lockers act like an open case giving superior on road handling with true control Offroading.  You decide from your driver’s seat when you want your axles locked or not.  Great for Offroading control.

Air Lockers: Full case lockers and have the same characteristics as the electric lockers but they are engaged via air compressor.  They run as an open case until you engage the air compressor via in cab switch.  The air compressor pressurizes and engages the locker.  Superb on road handling and off-road performance.

Locker choice is personal as well as financial for most of us.  Electric and Air Lockers are more expensive but give the best handling.  Full Case Automatic Lockers offer robust, tried and tested technology that will not let you down but has on road handling to get used to as well as causing excessive tire ware on daily driven Jeeps.  Lunchbox Lockers are a great starting point and cost effective way for a non technical person to install and drive.
